Can anyone recommend a good security. I downloaded free trial of panda security but found it really slows down laptop. I've been recommended Nod32 as being effective, reliable and light. However it does not include firewall. Is firewall needed and is using windows firewall enough protection?
First do you want to buy an antivirus or do you want to use a free version? If you want to buy one Nod32 is very good. It has top rated detection rates in various online tests. Something similar to it would be Kasprsky Antivirus or Avira's Premium Suite.
For free versions, I would recommend either Avast, Avira or Active Virus Shield (made by AOL but based on kaspersky engine).
An antivirus isn't a firewall, meaning it can't blobk outgoing or ingoing traffic. Windows Xp already has a firewall free trial panda antivirusintegrated but it isn't that great. Installing an auxiliary firewall application will improve your security status. Comodo and Zone Alarm are both free and very good.
I agree, AVG works great. I have it on my computers at work, home and laptop and have had no trouble since I started using it. And like he said, it is free. Good luck!

Windows firewall is a joke to start with.
I personally use sygate for my firewall because i can lock my pc down tighter than a nuns nether regions. If you are looking for free anti virus that will not chug your pc down but offers some good protection i would suggest ya go snag AVG.
I recommend (for anti virus software):
1. Avast! Antivirus
2. Antivir Personal Edition
3. AVG Free
For Firewall: (no Windows Firewall is better thafree trial panda antivirusn nothing but worse than most)
1. Zone Alarm
2. Sygate Personal Firewall (discontinued, but usable and seriously powerful)
I use Norton personally. People say bad things about it , but it has always worked great for me. It is very sensitive and kicks on to the slightest security threat. The online tech support is great and has addition tools for download and step by step instructions on how to get rid of hard malicious software!

Is AVG Free for a virus scanner and ZoneAlarm Free version for a firewall. Both are very good, come with regular updates, and are very, very free.
use AVG Free, it doesn't slow down your computer, and best of all, its freeeee!!!
